To show her appreciation for all the free meals she's had at their apartment, Penny, using money from an acting residual check, gives Leonard and Sheldon each a gift: a vintage, mint, in-the-box, Mego Star Trek Transporter, with real transporter action - apiece. They both love their gift.
It has additional special meaning for Leonard since it was given to him from Penny with love. And it has additional special meaning for Sheldon since his Leonard Nimoy Spock miniature action figure would fit in the toy. However, Penny is dismayed to learn that neither Leonard or Sheldon plan on opening their respective gift to play with it since doing so would diminish its value.
Later, Sheldon, hearing the voice of his Spock miniature action figure in his dreams telling him to do so, decides to open his gift to play with it.
The result makes him contemplate secretly switching his now useless toy with Leonard's mint condition, still-in-the-box toy. She lives over on Manhattan Beach, so it takes over an hour to get there. Raj: She was looking for a husband so she can appear to be straight. Howard: Well, yes. We both get our parents off our backs. I thought you were in favour of gay people getting married. Scene: The apartment. Sheldon is working on his laptop.
Spock is looking at him judgementally. He switches the two toys. Switches them back again. Penny and Leonard enter. Penny: I dunno. Picks up box. Sheldon screams. She shook it.
We all saw her. Penny: Leonard, I bought you this because I wanted you to have fun with it. Sheldon: Yes. Yes, he did, that is a perfectly satisfying and plausible explanation. That was a lie. I opened my own toy. And it was already broken so I switched them. Yours was broken in an earthquake.
Sheldon: My Mr Spock doll came to me in a dream and forced me to open it. And when the toy broke I switched it for yours. Later he encouraged me to do the right thing and I defied him. Raj brings Howard and Bernadette with him to chaperone his date; not unusual for first meetings in arranged marriages. Also since they're short, Raj will feel like he's six foot two. Lakshmi arrived and Raj is feeling good about it.
While staring at his whiteboard Sheldon sighs that it's like looking at the universe naked. He hears a voice calling out to him. It's his Mr. Spock action-figure. He tells Sheldon that he should play with his transporter because the purpose of a toy is to be played with and to not play with it would be First he has to wake up.
Then he takes the transporter out and on his second use of it, the toy breaks. Sheldon freaks out and then exchanges it for Leonard's since he is never going to open his transporter.
Raj's dinner with Lakshmi went well that their having dinner in his apartment. Lakshmi is impressed with Raj and they check the number of messages from their parents who want to know how they are getting alone. Lakshmi also sets the record straight that she's a lesbian.
She has heard plenty of rumors about him back in India. Between his lava cake, little soaps, perfume and his music knowledge, Raj has every indication that he is gay. Raj is not happy and neither is Lakshmi who wanted a phony-baloney husband her parents would have loved. Sheldon now dreams he's on the planet Vulcan. Two suns and no sunscreen.
